A quality fixed blade is a must-have for the serious outdoor enthusiast, so this week on Warehouse Hunts we’re looking at a few knives to help you fill out your camping and survival gear packs this summer.

First up is the Schrade 37M Frontier – this one with the Micarta handles. The seven inch blade is made from powder-coated 8Cr13MoV high carbon steel and a finger choil for a more technical grip. It’s a solid and affordable entry-level knife that offers a sharp edge and a nice collection of accessories, including a nylon belt sheath with ferro rod and sharpening stone.

The RAT-5 Survival Knife from Ontario Knife Company keeps it simple and effective. The five-and-a-quarter inch blade has nice size and is made from 1095 Carbon steel with a black powder coating. The handle is tan Micarta with a rather beefy but comfortable hand-feel. I can definitely see why it’s a favorite for outdoorsmen and military personnel around the world. Comes with a secure nylon and Kydex sheath.

The ESEE-4 is a slightly longer, more “wilderness” version of the popular ESEE-3 model. The four inch blade is the shortest of the knives we’re going to the look at, but I actually prefer the compactness for most applications, and it’s rather pack-friendly at less than 7.5 ounces. There’s some jimping and a finger choil for more precise cuts, and the Micarta handle feels quite ergonomic in hand. The molded sheath can attach to either a MOLLE back or clip plate for carrying versatility.

Finally, we have the Fällkniven A1. There are a lot of great things going on with this knife. The VG-10 steel blade is just over six-and-a-quarter inches long and nearly a quarter inch thick along the spine. Very heavy-duty. I really like the shape and the satin finish on the blade. The Kraton handle is simple but textured and comfortable and features a lanyard loop. The Zytel sheath is impressively slim and inconspicuous, which is great for saving space without skimping on knife size.

How to Warm Up Fast in the Morning after Camping in the Cold

Camping in cold weather doesn’t have to mean being cold all day. Prepare the night before to get your body toasty fast in the morning.

Step 1: Set up early
Set up your sleeping area early so it can absorb heat during the day. You should bring a foam pad to sleep on, a sleeping bag designed for temperatures colder than you expect, and a tent that has proper ventilation to prevent condensation building up inside.

Tip
Choose synthetic fibers for both your clothes and sleeping bag. Cotton traps moisture and is difficult to dry once it has gotten wet.

Step 2: Eat and drink
Drink extra water and consume extra calories during winter backpacking. Food and water are necessary for your body to generate heat.

Step 3: Do pre-bed exercise
Do a few jumping jacks or run in place before getting into your sleeping bag. This will heat up your body, which in turn heats up the sleeping bag. Heat the bag; the bag heats you.

Tip
Go to the bathroom before you go to bed. Your body needs to use up energy to keep that extra fluid warm, so get rid of it!

Step 4: Sleep
Put a warm, tightly sealed water bottle inside your sleeping bag at your feet to help hold in heat. Never sleep with your face inside the bag, as that will trap moisture. Instead, wear a hat and scarf to keep warm.

Tip
Put tomorrow’s clothes in between your bag and your sleeping pad, and bring your boot insoles or socks into the sleeping bag, to warm them before morning.

Step 5: Layer up
Layer up your clothes in the morning. Your body temperature is at its lowest right when you wake up, so you will need these layers until you become more active.

Step 6: Eat
Eat a full but short meal in the morning. This could include oatmeal, hot chocolate, or anything that is warm. Eat quickly so you don’t lose body heat sitting still.

Step 7: Get moving
Get moving! The longer your body sits without activity, the longer it has to lose heat. So get out and get active.

Winter Camping Trip 2015 – Inside the Tent

I have two new items since my last winter backpacking trip; a sleeping bag liner had I use as a frost cover and using two candle lanterns as a tent heater. Concerning the candle lanterns; they were only able to raise the tent 10 – 15 F. Each person will have to decide for themselves if the limited warmth they provide is worth the limited risk.

Parking Location: N38° 45.689′ W78° 16.923′
From Front Royal entrance station, take Skyline Dr. S to mile marker 21 and park in the lot on the right not too far after Hogback Overlook.

Trails Used (in order) and Route Notes

Day 1

Start by heading south on the Appalachian Trail from the trailhead connected to the parking lot.
At the Junction with Tuscarora Trail, take a right to continue on Tuscarora Trail. (Yes, this is where we took the wrong turn and ended up back at Skyline Drive)
Take Matthews Arm Trail towards Matthews Arm Campground.
Pass the campground and cross over Skyline Drive.
From the other side of Skyline Drive take Elkwallow Trail.
Continue along ridge line, via Elkwallow Trail.
At the next junction, hang a right on Thornton Trail to begin descending back towards Skyline Dr.
Cross the road to continue on Thornton Trail.
Decent camping opportunities become available as you approach the Thornton River. A potential area on the right (that we skipped) is marked in my GPS data file for the trip.
Continue on Thornton Trail. From this point on, the trail will cross back and forth across the river several times, before any particular decent camping areas appear.
Reach the intersection with Hull School Trail. There are reportedly several decent camping oppurtunities within range of this intersection. We chose to continue down Thornton Trail a little ways and camp not to far from the river as a water source.

Mileage: 12.1 miles
Gross Ascent: 1,621′
Gross Descent: 3,632′

Day 2

Break Camp and follow Thornton Trail back to trail junction.
Hang a right to head uphill on Hull School Trail
Continue on Hull School Trail, crossing the Piney River, and passing the Bolen Family Cemetery.
Take the Keyser Run Fire Road towards the Little Devil’s Stairs Trailhead Parking area, and Rt 614.
At the parking area, head up Little Devil’s Stairs Trail, though the canyon. Prepare for numerous zig-zags over flowing water and potentially slick rocks, depending on recent rainfall and time of year.
After gaining 1,200′ or so climbing out of the canyon, reach the the intersection to reconvene with Keyser Run Fire Road once again. At this point you can either stay in the woods by heading left towards Pole Link Bridge and Sugarloaf Trails, which will take you back to the AT and ultimately your car, or hang a right on the fire road towards Skyline Dr for a road hike along several scenic overlooks. We chose the latter.
Return to the parking lot on Skyline Drive.

Gross Descent: 1,237′

Παρακολουθούμε, τις σχέσεις των εργαζομένων στο κάμπινγκ ενός έξυπνου επιχειρηματία (Τάκης Μόσχος), με κεντρικό πρόσωπο τον Μήτσο (Νίκος Καλογερόπουλος), ο οποίος είναι ένας βοσκός που δεν έχει ματαδεί «πολιτισμό» στην ζωή του και κατεβαίνει από το χωριό του, το Αραχναίο, για να αναλάβει την σχολή ιππασίας που θα λειτουργεί εκεί.

Θα τον εκνευρίσει πολλές φορές ο ενθουσιώδης, νεαρός ναυαγοσώστης, γεμάτος αυτοπεποίθηση από την κορμάρα του, ο Τεό (Νίκος Χύτας), ο οποίος όμως γρήγορα νιώθει πως έχει πολλά ακόμα να μάθει, για όλα όσα νομίζει πως ξέρει.

Εκεί θα περιφέρεται και ο Αγροφύλακας (Βαγγέλης Καζάν), που έχει προηγούμενα με τον Μήτσο, αλλά είναι και κάργα ερωτευμένος, αλλά χωρίς ανταπόκριση, με την μαγείρισσα του κάμπινγκ, την Κατίνα (Λυδία Λένωση), το Κατινάκι…

Ο φαινομενικά σοβαρότερος όλων Σπύρος (Ντίνος Αυγουστίδης), χάνει τα αυγά και τα καλάθια όταν εμφανίζεται η πρώην σύζυγός του, τον χωρισμό της οποίας ποτέ δεν ξεπέρασε, Βάλια (Νόνη Ιωαννίδου).

Ο μπάρμαν, ο Πετράν (Αντώνης Αλεξίου), μυστήριος, όπως όλοι οι μπάρμεν.

Ο έτερος μάγειρας, ο Θύμος (Μανώλης Δεστούνης), μεγάλο χαρτόμουτρο, κατακλέβει προσωπικό και πελάτες, κάτω από τη μύτη του αφεντικού του.

Ο καπετάν Αντώνης, ο ψαράς που προμηθεύει με ψάρια το κάμπινγκ, είναι έτοιμος να τα βροντήξει όλα για τον παράνομο δεσμό του με το Κατινάκι και να αφήσει πίσω του, γυναίκα και παιδιά.

Όλα θα ανατραπούν στην ζωή του Μήτσου, μόλις φτάσει στο κάμπινγκ η Σαμάνθα, μια Γερμανίδα τουρίστρια, που κάνει μόνη της διακοπές. Ο Μήτσος, στην κυριολεξία «θα τα δει όλα». Αλλά η πίκρα του, μόλις φτάσει στο τέλος του καλοκαιριού ο σύζυγος της από την Γερμανία, δεν γιατρεύεται με τίποτα. Και η γκρίνια του πατέρα του (Βασίλης Τσαγκλός) για να γυρίσει πίσω στο χωριό και στα γίδια τους, αφόρητη.

Ο Μάιμος (ο Νίκος Καλογερόπουλος πάλι, έχει δύο ρόλους στην σειρά) είναι η θρυλική μορφή, κάτι σαν μασκότ του κάμπινγκ και της ευρύτερης περιοχής. Η μάνα του πέθανε στην γέννα και αυτός μισότρελος, αυτιστικός αναζητά συνεχώς τον πατέρα του δεν τον ξέρει κανείς, ή κάνει πως δεν τον ξέρει κανείς.
